Drug Abuse and the Disorders Resulting from It

Drug abuse also known as substance abuse and chemical abuse is a disorder characterized by the destructive pattern of using the substance leading to the problems such as behavioral changes and distress. It is not only limited to the drugs which work as psycho active or mind altering. It is also considered abuse when an activity is inappropriately used like it was propofol medication in the case of Michael Jackson death and steroids used for enhancing performance in the sports.

It leads to the dependency of the person to a particular substance such as drugs, alcohols and can also be in the form of medication. When a person becomes addicted, they create problems such as health issues, social and psychological problems, accidents, homicides, violence, and morbidity. Suicidal rates are high among the persons addicted to drugs and alcohol. The reason believed to be is social isolation and physiological distortion of the brain chemistry caused by the long term use of the alcohol or other drug. In USA 30 % of suicides are related to the alcohol abuse.

In recent times teens are becoming more engaged in prescription drug abuse which includes narcotics and stimulant medications which can cure the conditions such as attention deficit disorder. Early age drinking are smoking are fast becoming the part of modern day youths. What is started as an experiment soon becomes the addiction for them. Drugs have direct influence over the mind and behavior of the person concerned causing them to become addicted to it. Since many begin abusing the drugs as an away to cope social, psychological and mental pressure, therefore physical treatment is not alone sufficient to keep the user away from the drug. Some of the symptoms and signs that show you are addicted are as follows;-

1.)  Drug tolerance

2.)  Start taking drugs to avoid any withdrawal symptoms

3.)  Drug use is not under your control

4.)  Your life starts revolving around the drug use

5.)  Abandoning activities that you enjoyed in past

6.)  You continue to use drug, despite knowing that it is causing harm to you

Any treatment program must include counseling and therapy sessions, ensuring the user does not returns to the drugs. Treatment provides referral to the clinic centers and rehab which effectively treat drug, substance or alcohol abuse, apart from initial cleansing of the whole system and addressing the thinking patterns and behavioral changes of the person.
