Risks and Problems Associated With Joint Effusion

You may suffer from joint effusion due to trauma or an infection in the lining of the inner capsule. There is a fluid content in the synovial joints that helps in smooth movement of the joints. Reducing friction, this fluid helps in lubrication of the bones during any physical activity. Likewise the thumb joints, wrist joints and knee joints are some of the areas in the body which get maximum amount of motion.

Yet, at times due to accident or any injury these joints swell and turn painful. The biochemical reaction inside the body thus produces fluid in excess amount as a measure of defense to this injury or pain. This excessive fluid present in the joints is a condition of joint effusion. In colloquial terms this is known as the presence of water in the joints.

Risks and Problems in Joint Effusion

This type of joint trauma can be a symptom of several conditions in the body. Mostly patient suffer from this type of joint pain in the knees and hips. This type of effusion is characterized with a number of risks and problems.

This is a degenerative joint disease occurs as a result of aging. In the beginning the patients suffers from pain then gradually there is stiffness, tenderness of joints and deformity and other problems of locomotion.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

This is a form of inflammatory disease resulting into painful joints with swelling and disturbance in movement. It affects your hands, knees and feet leading to accumulation of fluid in the joints. Since the tissues get inflamed, the muscles become stiff and weak.

Gouts

In this type of joint effusion uric acid get deposited in the joints which leads to pain and redness of the area affected. This occurs due to the defect in metabolism to synthesize the uric acid or excessive production of uric acid in body. The symptoms are acute pain, and redness of the area.

Many often infection in the tissues can also cause joint effusion. In cases of sprains, or fractures the person suffers from joint effusion. Here the tendons, cartilage, ligaments or muscles around the joint are affected with severe pain and inflammation.
